A New Era for Macleay College

On January 20, 2012 Macleay College opened the doors to its new $2 million campus at 28 Foveaux St. 2011 Journalism graduate Emily Bevan* visited the new campus in early December. This is Emily’s account of her first visit to 28 Foveaux St:

A feeling of change is in the air. Entering the building at 28 Foveaux St in Surry Hills, it’s like moving into a plush new apartment. The smell of new furniture fill the air. Everything is new. Welcome to Macleay College, new students of 2012.

The Student Lounge is the first thing that welcomes you from the street at ground level, with flatscreen TVs on the walls and lounges begging to be nuzzled into. The dedicated study area is great too. Upstairs, the smell of new carpet beckons and natural light fills the hallways. Recording rooms catch the eye – recording ROOMS, plural! No more fighting over radio equipment the day before bulletins are due.

Professional. Sleek. Expensive. Love it!

Outside, the streets are busy with city workers as the sound of Happy Hour wafts by. Fashionistas spill out of coffee shops while trend-setters munch on veggie burgers. This is our new world. Macleay College welcomes in the New Year with a new location - 28 Foveaux Street, Surry Hills.

The Business Centre next door will be handy for those last-minute print-outs, while the abundance of enticing cafés and fashion outlets are also likely to excite new students.

Outside the campus front door, students will find beers and Thai food going on at the KB Hotel, while Café Foveaux is worth checking out for lighter lunch options. The Apple Store across the road will draw in the tech-savvy and Downunder Discounts will be everyone’s new best friend, while Melbourne Cup is already sorted with the TAB nearby.

Around the corner, Café Dendu promises the best coffees around and Tailors on Central has $10 steak and chips all day every day. Boys, you even have your very own barber literally 10 steps from your classroom.

A small walk up the hill students will find food options are aplenty: Japanese, Italian, Modern Australian – take your pick. Friday night bevvies at the Excelsior Hotel, just 6 steps away, and ladies why not get a blow-dry on your way at La Imagen Hair??

You can tell the gourmet burgers at Café Zante’s across the road are worth checking out, judging by the amount of people filing in at lunchtime. There is also a Commonwealth Bank only 30 steps from the college.

After a long day at college, and a strenuous lunch break trying on shoes, book in for a yoga class or a traditional Thai massage just across the road to your left.

Ahh, this is going to be a good year!
