New Associate Dean is also heading up business faculty at Macleay College

Macleay College has appointed Thelma Raman as its inaugural Head of Business. Raman has a long and distinguished background in education, training and development, with several years’ international experience in the public and private sectors. Her blend of skills is a perfect match to Macleay College’s practical diploma offerings.

Raman says that students enrolling in 2012 have a great opportunity to learn about business from a practical point of view, and then qualify in 12 months with business skills to get a good job or else go into business for themselves.

“The Business Enterprise Project we use as a teaching model is a great learning tool for students,” says Raman. “Held over two trimesters, students go through the whole spectrum of putting together a business. It is very hands on, not theoretical. Students will learn all about marketing, accounting and planning, and then understand how to apply these skills in the real world.”

Raman says it is important for business students at Macleay College to get practical answers to the big questions they have – How do you come up with the business idea? How do you spot that gap in the market? “Throughout the year, business students are exposed to a wide range of lecturers who all have specialist skills in marketing, management, accounting and other essential topics, and are also currently active in industry.”

Raman adds that the one-year diploma course is doing well in terms of preparing students and getting them job ready. “We give our graduates a solid idea of what things are like out in the real world and the realities of the modern workplace,” she says.
