Dear Macleay College Students,

Some college staff are involved with an orphanage in Cambodia called ODA. It is an orphanage for kids, many of whom are there as a result of landmines.

The orphanage costs AUD$800 per month to run. There are currently 20 children living there aged about 4 to 17.

The man who runs it (Leng) has artistic and cultural programs for the kids and tries to give them skills. One of his current aims is to teach them to type and therefore give them a basic skill which will open up employment opportunities.

What we do
We obtain small laptops or netbooks (longer battery life, smaller keyboard for little fingers, easier to transport to Cambodia) and configure them with typing programs, maths games, English language programs etc. and send them over.

We started this project a year ago and have sent 12 machines to the orphanage. The kids love them and love to learn on them. In the last year, the orphanage has set up solar power so that they have light and can recharge machines. (They can also pump water from the river rather than carry it)

How you can help
If you have a working laptop with a decent battery that is no longer necessary to your life, we would be delighted to take it from you.

 What we need is:

  • Any laptop or netbook (10 to 12-inch screen is perfect)
  • Must have all its bits including charger
  • Must have a decent battery
  • Must run on Windows (Linux and Apple machines complicate matters too much)

More on the orphanage can be found here

If you can help, please deliver the machines to the front desk with your name and email. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
