Emily Bevan
2GB, producer
Emily Bevan had been working in the media in admin roles, but decided this year to retrain as a journalist at Macleay College. The move has paid dividends and she is now working weekends at 2GB as a producer.
Emily's job at 2GB…
It is a great experience to get a job at the number one radio station in Australia while I’m still studying. One of the lecturers at Macleay put me in touch with them to get some work experience, however they had a job going for the weekend slot. The program director asked me to write a few editorials for him and the next thing I knew I was offered a job thing producing for Mike Williams on the weekends. It’s fantastic.
My job is to write a lot of the items Mike talks about on air. This means I have to know his interests, think like him and write in his voice. I start the day by looking through news reports and wires. I rewrite these so they are in 'radio speak' and script a few editorials. Stories regularly change so I keep track of what needs to be updated so he doesn’t give the wrong information.
My shift is from 10pm to 6am, Friday and Saturday nights. I take all the phone calls and choose who is suitable to go on air. Soon I hope to start organising his interviews, which are pre-recorded during the week.
About Macleay College…
I have found the classes to be excellent and my teachers are really good. They are all working in the media, or have worked there recently. I find they are giving you stuff that you can actually use. I wouldn’t have got that initial interview with 2GB without help from Macleay’s staff. I am considering doing the Bachelor of Arts next year. For one extra year I’ll end up with so much more.
