Macleay's Business student, Zafira Shahishta, shares how Macleay helped her understand the process of starting up a new business.
High school was a huge rollercoaster ride for me. Back then I used to think that everything was hard but now when I reflect back I realise that they were some of the best years of my life. I made lifelong friendships and had amazing teachers. I still remember the day when I started Year 7 like yesterday. I thought I was so grown up, but I was far from it... I just didn't know it at the time.
Fast-forwarding to Year 12, I remember being stressed out thinking about what courses I'd study and what uni I would go to. There were so many options before me and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do in life. The main problem was that I wanted to do everything and that's what made it so difficult to choose a path. I did know that I wanted to be my own boss and I wanted my inner creativity to shine, so that's when event management came to mind.
I applied to many different big universities, and then one of my friends mentioned Macleay College. So I submitted an application and they asked me to come in for a campus tour and interview. Everything went well and the next thing I knew I was at orientation and I had started my Bachelor of Business specialising in Event Management. What differentiated Macleay from other institutions was that all of the lecturers have professional experience in industry, so we were learning real-world content. Another bonus was that the course duration for a full-time student was only 2 years so you are out working earlier and that's one of the main reasons why I chose Macleay.
Zafira started catering company Whisk with the help of her lecturers.

My time at Macleay has been quite a journey. Most of my assignments were presentation based, which gave me the confidence and experience to speak and present my ideas to others. An example of this was Pitch Day, where we were able to pitch our business ideas to a panel of industry professionals. My business idea was called ‘Pets on Campus” which focussed on holding pet therapy sessions at universities and colleges prior to exams and busy study periods, as a stress relief. My group member Alana Stevens and I won the best sales pitch award which was a big moment for me!

I have always had a passion for baking and creating new things, which along with my studies at Macleay, inspired me to launch my own business called Whisk. Whisk is my catering business that supplies customised cakes and desserts for any occasion. I began baking back in 2011, starting with cupcakes and as time went on I progressed to bigger cakes and then dessert cups. Once the HSC was over, I was encouraged by friends and family to open up my own cake business. My business name was initially called Sweetest Revenge and as time went by I decided to give it a fresh new name and logo with the assistance of my lecturers. That's when Whisk was born.
Becoming an entrepreneur may sound easy but there are so many things to take into consideration. Macleay has helped me gain knowledge on many little things that make a huge difference in one's business. The lecturers at Macleay helped me gain so much confidence in just one and a half years. They motivated me to think big and pushed me to constantly grow. I have also had the opportunity to bake for some of Macleay's events, which was a pleasure and also a great opportunity to add to my CV.
