Name: Elana McIntyre
Course: Diploma of Journalism
Internship: Nova 96.9, Smooth 95.3, Channel 7
What type of internship work are you doing?
I’ve also been interning at Channel 7. The news team asked me to go out, on my own with a camera crew and shoot/produce a story. To my surprise, my story was published on the 6pm. I had to pinch myself after watching it!I’m currently interning at Nova 96.9 writing traffic news for Matt DeGroot, (Nova news director) and the newsreader for Fitzy and Whipper. I also write the traffic for Glen Daniels for Smooth 95.3, as the newsrooms are shared. I go in once or twice a week and also help the afternoon newsreaders with audio grabs, bulletins and research. I have also worked with the legendary Ron Wilson at Smooth 95.3.
What are you most proud of?
Producing a story all by myself for Channel 7, which was published on their 6pm bulletin, all on my first day of interning. I had no producers to guide me, but the skills I had learnt through Macleay helped me to create a quality piece, which was ready to air in collaboration with their cameramen.
Another highlight was Channel Ten publishing my story on Street Art in Sydney, which I produced and presented myself.
What have you enjoyed most about the course so far?
My entire life has been transformed. Macleay College has helped me form incredible relationships with many industry professionals, who have nurtured my growth in the industry. I’ve gained practical experience working with some of the most respected journalists in commercial radio and television news. For me, connecting with dynamic, intelligent professionals and being surrounded by other passionate mentors has been the most fulfilling part of studying at Macleay College. I’m inspired each day.
I'm not sure, but I do know that every day I am learning and growing as a person. I hope to create quality news, connect with people who want to be heard and tell their stories. Macleay has laid down a strong foundation for me, and now I feel as though I'm ready to build a career doing what I love.
