It's Time We Talk About Internships

Written by Alyshia Anderson

It’s time we talk about internships and why you should-definitely-100%-no-matter-what intern.

Internships are a fantastic way to gain industry experience and get a real feel for the career you’re aiming for, plus they allow you to meet and connect with people already working your dream job. Check out our list for why internships are rock!

The first day I walked into uni, my lecturer told me to create a little black book and hold it tight. No matter what industry you’re aiming for CONNECTIONS. ARE. EVERYTHING.

Your internship will expose you to people already working in your dream job, and who’s better to learn from than them? They were in your position once. Speak to them and ask questions, they’ll be more than happy to answer them.

And if you make a good impression? They may put you forward for roles or be a referee on your resume. Plus, it’s really awesome to just make friends with people who are as passionate about your industry as you are.

At 18 I was adamant I wanted to work in magazines. After flying to Sydney to intern with Cleo, I realised my heart lay with broadcast journalism. I may not have got what I expected out of that week, but it taught me what career I needed to aim for.

You might love it or hate it, but it’s better to work out if this is the job for you as early as possible.

Remember sitting in algebra and thinking, “When the heck am I ever going to use this?”. Whilst I’m not saying you’re going to use everything you learned, it’s still great to finally put your skills to use.

It’s also a way to find your strengths and weaknesses in your industry and find out what you need to improve on.

There’s a ton of people out there who started their roles as interns before being offered a permanent position. Although not many internships will actually state this on the ad, the possibilities are endless. If you show dedication and potential, you’ll leave an impression.

And although you may not be offered the job straight out from your internship, when they’re hiring they’ll have you at the top of their list.

If you’re already applying for jobs, you’ll know that more and more positions are asking for industry experience. Not only will interning improve your skills, but it’ll improve your resume significantly – especially if you apply for a position at a company you’ve already interned for.

Plus, potential employers will see that you’re dedicated to improving your skills and advancing yourself.

So what are you waiting for? Get applying!
