Macleay College makes Australian journalism history with launch of The Newsroom
Journalism students at Macleay College are keeping one step ahead of the dramatic changes currently taking place in the media landscape with this month's launch of The Newsroom, Australia's first truly live online student newsroom.
Located at newsroom.macleay.net, The Newsroom at Macleay College will produce up to date and relevant stories covering a wide range of topics including news, features, sports, multimedia, lifestyle, investigations and world news along with a designated picture desk.
The Newsroom is led by 11 Editors overseeing a team of 50 journalism students. They will investigate and write local news stories, events and personal profiles along with tackling issues that affect the broader community.
The Newsroom at Macleay College is a truly unique experience for us as journalism students. We have no agenda to push and can focus entirely on delivering stories of interest and relevance, in an environment which closely imitates a professional newsroom, said Nigel Gladstone, current student and editor of The Newsroom.
The Newsroom forms an integral part of the practical and applied style of teaching employed by Macleay to produce highly employable graduates.
This fully functioning digital newsroom not only provides valuable hands-on and real-life journalism experience for our students, it will also deliver timely and relevant news to the local community, said Stephen Davis, Head of Journalism, Macleay College.
The Newsroom is designed to provide our students with skills that are relevant to the rapidly evolving media landscape particularly reflecting the shift towards online and digital platforms.
