DESCRIBE A TYPICAL WORKING DAY IN THE LIFE OF AMY MILLER…
I start the day with with a walk, meditation and then get my household ready for the day! Once 9am hits I am working on lectures for the coming week, finding resources and keeping abreast of news that would be relevant for my students.
I have a few clients in the travel and health industries, so I check where we are at with our strategy, scan the media for stories and post Facebook and Instagram updates. Each day in PR is different however, so it is varied and inspiring.
WHAT DO YOU TEACH IN YOUR CLASSES THAT YOU WISH YOU HAD BEEN TAUGHT YOURSELF?
I teach students to be bold with their thinking and creativity. To think strategically is also a key skill I wish I was taught more about. We look at how to implement public relations strategy across disciplines and in a manner that is integrated with advertising and marketing. This makes working on communication campaigns exciting, collaborative and varied.
WHAT SKILLS DO YOU NEED TO SUCCESS IN THE WORLD OF PR?
You need to understand how public relations can benefit a brand or company and how certain PR methodologies work with other communication departments. Thinking outside of the box and being creative in your approach is a great bonus on top of writing expertise, organisation skills in relation to an event, research experience and the ability to identify opportunities in the marketplace and media.
HOW WOULD YOU SPEND A BILLION DOLLARS?
Great question – I would want to do so much. I would select a number of charities that need support and donate more, including World Vision where we have sponsored a child for over 6 years and Room To Read, an organisation that build schools and donates supplies for ongoing education in children. In addition, I would invest more in my ongoing business enterprise, School Business Register which helps support local business and schools. I would also set up another business which aims to support people in their creative pursuits; and probably take a European holiday to boot!
