Meet Nea Nieminen. She is studying a Bachelor of Business (Event Management) at Macleay. She is part of our large international student body.
Russel Lewis, Macleay's International Student Services Support Officer sat down with Nea to learn a little more about her and what brought her from icy, beautiful Finland to the sunny shores of Australia.
Nea Nieminen, Finland native now calls Sydney home.
Tell us about yourself
I’m 22 years old and I’m from Finland. I have been living in Sydney for about one and half years. I’m trying to live quite a healthy lifestyle and stay active with different kind of sports. I’m quite funny, so I enjoy being around people who make me laugh.
What’s the best thing about living in Australia?
The best thing about living in Australia is definitely the sun and the weather. It is very different compared to Finland. I love that Sydney is such a big city but still has many beautiful beaches and outdoor activities. My favourite thing to do is the coastal walks.
What do you miss most about home?
Even though I love summer and the weather in Australia, I still miss winter and the snow. As Christmas is my favourite holiday, the hardest thing to come to terms with is that it doesn’t snow on Christmas. And, of course I miss my family and friends from home, but with Skype and Facetime, it doesn’t even feel like I’m on the other side of the world.
What was the inspiration for choosing your course?
During my school journey I was always a member of the student council and our ‘job’ was to plan fun events for students. We organised events ranging from themed parties, fun sport days and cruises. I had so much fun that it never actually felt like work and that’s when I realised Event Management could be my calling.
What has your experience at Macleay been like so far?
Even though this is my first trimester, I have already fallen in love with Macleay. Every lecturer really cares about each and every one of their students, and you can see how much they love what they do. It really does keep me motivated to study as I enjoy every little bit of learning. As an international student, it is great to see how much support is available to help me with my studies.
What do you want to do after graduation?
I’m really interested in charity work and volunteering. So, after graduation, my dream is to work on some sort of charity event or gala. I would love for my work to be meaningful and bring a change in this world we are living in.
Where do you see yourself in next 5 years
In 5 years, I see myself owning an event management company mainly focusing on charity work globally.
Nea's goal is to own an event management company focusing on charity work globally.
