Meet Niall Powers

Niall Powers

After graduating with a Diploma of Business Management (Sports Business), Niall landed a role as the Training Manager at Above & Beyond Boating – the company where he had interned while he was studying. These days, on top of his job as Training Manager, Niall also runs his own Sailing Coaching business, providing training services to Sailing Clubs around Sydney!

Niall Powers.pngTell us a bit about yourself
I'm 21 years old and I am a Macleay graduate. I studied Business Management specialising in Sports Business. I live on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, and over the past 10 years I have been heavily involved in the sport of Sailing. Since learning the basics every week at Manly Skiff Club as a young 'tacker', I have worked my way through the different levels of participation at State, National, and International events, as well as experiencing amazing new locations and meeting some of my closest friends and mentors.  I have now progressed into Coaching and have so far trained hundreds of young kids at many sailing clubs and training centres in Sydney.

What are your aspirations?
Down the track, I would love to be working with larger sailing organisations and getting more involved with the management of established sailing events. Naturally, a lot of people (including me!) in the sailing community aspire to Sailing's 'Top 3' - America's Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, and Olympic Games. There are amazing challenges for everyone involved at that level.

Why did you choose the course?
After finishing high school, I didn't have a clear understanding of what course or career path I wanted to take. Participating in different sports (like NRL, Soccer, Athletics etc.) was never much interest to me, but after doing some work experience on the coaching and management side of sailing, I thought that exploring the Sports Business side of things would be a great option for me. I certainly didn't want to commit to a university course for 3 years or more in a subject that I still wasn't sure about, and that is when I discovered the option of choosing Macleay.

What was the Macleay experience like?
The smaller environment with more personal interaction with students and mentors at Macleay was more suited to my learning style. What I really liked about Macleay was the opportunity to gain experience as an intern while studying at the same time. This was invaluable to me for learning how to adapt to new challenges and new environments.

Where did you intern during your studies?
For my internship, I worked with Above & Beyond Boating. Above & Beyond Boating specialise in personalised training to help boat owners achieve their sailing dreams. After finishing my internship, I continued on as the Training Manager at ABB as well as working on other Sailing Coaching projects.

Niall-Powers-reduced.jpgProfessionally, what are you up to now?
Currently, I am managing my own Sailing Coaching business, providing training services to Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club and St George Sailing Club, as well as providing class development for Junior Sailing Associations. I am also continuing my role with Above and Beyond Boating as the Training Manager.
