With a 20+ year career history in the media and digital communications industry, David has a reputation for directing and delivering award winning excellence in communications strategies having been a winner and finalist across numerous Australian Commercial Radio Awards. He is currently the managing director of his own consultancy company, Strategic Media Solutions, which provides marketing, media and communications services to a range of corporate and small business clients. It’s taken me on an amazing journey from Australia's smallest regional towns, to China, the USA, Europe, Japan and the UK.
How did you get into the industry?
I answered a small classified newspaper ad in the Sydney Morning Herald and ended up worked straight out of school for JC Williamson’s Theatres and got to be part of the initial tour for The Eagles in Australia as well as a whole range of stage and theatre shows. From there it was into commercial radio in Sydney and then to a range of regional and capital city operations around Australia. That’s seen me experience and assume roles across all facets of media, communications and business from on air, to management and corporate adviser.
What is the biggest difference in the industry since you were at university?
Without a doubt technology today makes it so much easier to access information at your finger tips. We’ve also made a wise move away from the old style academic class room style of “chalk and talk” to more collaborative learning and agile teaching. Today we’re doing a way better job of preparing people to head into the business world equipping with them more than just a degree.
What do you do when you are not teaching?
I’m a Pisces through and through so heading to the beach, the water or getting out doors is what I really enjoy. Doing it with my family makes it so much more enjoyable regardless of what time of the year it is. Wherever we go you’ll also find lots of music going with us and you may even catch us taking in some live music concerts and sessions as well. I’m also a pretty average drummer but that’s only because I’m not that great at singing either !
What do you enjoy about teaching at Macleay?
There’s no barriers to knowledge and learning at Macleay. All of the teachers and lecturers are willing to stop and talk and share their real life business experiences. There’s a strong feeling of camaraderie here. We’re really hear for the students and go that extra mile to make sure we’re helping and guiding them to be part of the business world when they graduate from the college.
