How did you get into the industry?
I decided at the age of 15 I wanted to work in the Hospitality industry. I had a traineeship, so I worked and got my qualifications at the same time. I ended up working for 10 years in this field. I had a large overseas trip and lived overseas in West Africa for three years and when I came back to Australia, decided I wanted to work in Events and Catering and did that for another 15 years.
What is the biggest difference in the industry since you were at university?
The elements which have not really changed are working in teams, client relations, communication skills and being able to relate, empathise and motivate others.
Technology and trends relating food and beverage, event design and customer engagement.
What do you do when you are not teaching?
I am often swimming, reading and a taxi for my teenage son to his many sporting and music activities. You can catch me a lot at the SCG watching the Swans too.
What do you enjoy about teaching at Macleay?
Working with my amazing colleagues and the students at Macleay College.
What is the best advice you give your students?Do what you love and love what you do. Opportunities are everywhere, so build your networks. Follow your dream, but if it changes that's ok too, it's the 21st century.
